Adjustments, also known as manipulations, and mobilizations are highly skilled and precise low force movements that are typically performed manually on targeted joints. Chiropractors are trained to modify the procedure and positioning based on each patient’s individual needs and preferences.

The goal of an adjustment or mobilization of the spine or extremity is to relieve pain and stiffness, improve mobility, and restore function to the affected area. Most patients experience immediate relief after adjustments/mobilizations, whether with or without cavitations.

Various techniques can be used to mobilize or adjust a joint depending on a patient’s condition and preferences:

  • Joint mobilizations: Chiropractic mobilizations are gentle manual techniques used by chiropractors to restore mobility and relieve pain in joints and soft tissues. This type of therapy can be included in conjunction with traditional adjusting or as an alternative to adjustments.
  • The “Diversified” manual adjustment: This is a rapid joint manipulation, performed under controlled force. This type of adjustment generates what is called a cavitation, which causes the ‘popping’ noise and is explained by the release of a gas present inside the joints.
  • ‘Drop’ adjustments: This method involves a precise low-force movement through the joint. During the adjustment, the raised part of the table will drop, allowing for a gentle, precise manipulation of the joint without causing cavitation.
  • Impulse device: This instrument applies a rapid, specific and low force movement to the joints. This technique is particularly suitable for those who prefer an alternative to adjustments with cavitation as a part of their care plan.

Soft tissue therapy involves releasing the body’s soft tissues, including muscles, fascia, tendons, nerves and ligaments, manually or with instruments. The goal of soft tissue therapy is to break up adhesions, also known as scar tissue, to relieve muscle tension, nerve tension and displace tissue fluids. Injuries such as headaches, back and neck pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shoulder pain, tendinopathies, sciatic nerve pain, plantar fasciitis, and elbow pain are some of the conditions that can benefit from muscle release techniques, neural dynamics or instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilizations.

  • Muscle Release Technique: During a muscle release treatment, the patient will move through a series of precise movement protocols while the practitioner manually works on the affected tissues.
  • Instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization: In this technique, the practitioner uses a tool to loosen adhesions, achieving the same goals as the muscle release technique.
  • ‘Neural Dynamics’ Technique: This type of treatment can help with nerve irritation or compression. The technique aims to reduce pain, restore mobility, and improve nerve glide and circulation, which can improve nerve function and reduce nerve related pain. This technique includes a combination of precise movement protocols to mobilize targeted peripheral nerves while manual soft tissue work and vibration are applied along the pathway of the effected nerves.

Rehabilitation is an important factor in the healing process and is integrated into every treatment plan. Once the pain from an injury or condition subsides, residual weakness and functional limitations of the injured tissue may still be present. This makes the patient more vulnerable to further injury.

Personalized exercise programs are prescribed to stabilize the condition for which you are seeking chiropractic care. Stretching and strengthening exercises, easily performed at home in a short time, are often necessary to speed up the healing process, stabilize a patient’s condition, and/or prevent relapses.

These exercises will be explained and demonstrated to you during your chiropractic consultations. Exercises related to maintaining good posture, preventing injury and improving overall wellness may also be recommended.
